Vox casting

Big production news today is that we are announcing the voice actors for the movie. We’re delighted that such a great cast, with so much talent, is on board. Together they bring the highest calibre of performance to ULTRAMARINES, and we’re very excited that their voices - and facial expressions - will be part of making these Space Marines come to life.

You can read the announcement in the News section of the website, and see the actors talking about being a part of the movie in this clip.

Guest blog - Nelson at Games Workshop

It’s all in the detail…

Here in the Licensing department at Games Workshop, we work closely with our partners on the various licensed projects we undertake - and I’m the one lucky enough to be working on the Ultramarines movie with the crew at Codex Pictures. We’re a small, dedicated team here in Licensing, with over 40 years of combined Games Workshop experience between the four of us (!). But there’s one thing we all agree on: whatever the latest licensed project is, be it a computer game, role play game or feature length movie, attention to detail is key with the Warhammer 40,000 universe.

Take the artwork, for example. Typically with a licensed project, there are a lot of variant designs and concept sketches early on. There’s much going back and forth over the direction and options we have before we narrow down the assets and get started on the actualisation.

Talking Head

I’ve recently been to see Image Metrics to find out how the first tests have gone. They will transfer our actors' performances onto CGI heads which will then be placed inside power armour - as you will have seen in the Image Metrics show reel, the process is a bit like mo-cap but uses no markers. There’s a lot of facial animation in the movie, so getting tests like this right now is good news. I can’t wait to see a finished rendered Space Marine head! Hope to share more of this with you sometime soon.

Four more for the gallery

In December we released the very first piece of concept art for the movie, the entrance to the Codex Chapel. But that was only the beginning!

This week, we really pleased to share a few more pieces that we have managed to wrangle out of the art and design team at the studio in Cardiff. Check out the four latest concept designs, over in the Gallery section of the website, and let us know what you think.

Technology to Capture the Soul

We’ve just announced that we’re  using Image Metrics’ animated facial capture technique for the Ultramarines movie. Truly amazing technology.

Read more about it here.  Lots more to come on this as the production progresses…

Dan Abnett on designers

Now it’s about the realisation…

So, the project advances, and it’s been very cool to see the creative crew come together. Over the next few months, on the Ultramarines movie website or places like this blog, you’ll get to meet some of those people and see what they’ve been working on. I’ve already had a glimpse or two. I’ve heard the artists speak about the processes and challenges, and I’ve had sight of some of the early work in progress. Maybe I’m a sucker for this kind of thing, but I like to see talented people talking enthusiastically about what they’re good at, and discovering the thoughts behind it.

Not the Glory, the Victory...

I knew making a Warhammer 40,000 movie was going to be a big deal for many people, and a great honour to be trusted with, but it still felt amazing to be at the UK Games Day in September and see firsthand how excited everyone was when they heard about ULTRAMARINES. It was also great to see the response to the announcement of Dan Abnett as writer and, just in case I need to confirm what many of you have guessed, he really has done a cracking job with the script.
