Four more for the gallery
In December we released the very first piece of concept art for the movie, the entrance to the Codex Chapel. But that was only the beginning!
This week, we really pleased to share a few more pieces that we have managed to wrangle out of the art and design team at the studio in Cardiff. Check out the four latest concept designs, over in the Gallery section of the website, and let us know what you think.

bolter concept
bolters in present-day background is not anymore caseless weapon!!! so the bolter MUST HAVE lock and ejector!

As far as I'm concerned,
As far as I'm concerned, sticking to "the codex" bit won't hurt. The bolter shell has nothing wrong with it, maybe aside from the firing pin part; But as for the thunderhawk, I think it may be best to stick to the forgeworld interior. Current one sort of looks featureless, like any generic dropship interior. Also it's quite small for a thunderhawk.

Normally servitors are used for heavy manual labor, and the style on the style present doesn't look quite right. It isn't a frontline unit and the shoulder pads, and the breastplate look out of place. Most servitors are usually lobotomized servants with machine bits sticking out of them - Although I can see servitors being used for menial medical tasks, surgery seems to be hardly one of them, and certainly not for surgery where great precision and skill is needed; usually this task would fall upon an apothecary.

Reference for the style of the servitor. If it did do surgery, I could see its entire arms being replaced for the task as well as some sort of brace, as well as a more larger, extensive eye that extrudes to look into precision tasks. I like how the poor status of the skin and flesh is added; the respirator and the other metal bits on the face are far too smooth and rounded. The book is also... well, not fitting, considering the servitor's role. It's kind of like giving a guardsman a daemonhammer, or some other rare weapon reserved for the elite.
The codex chapel looks small, but I don't know. So far looks in line with everything. More 'gothic' feel needed as poster below said.
Remember that the Ultramarines, after all, are the strictest adherents to the founding principles, and it's usually hard to find deviations aside from the things strictly presented in the material already in existence. Some of the things certainly do need more of a gothic feel, as well as harsher angles and more 'grit'.
Hell, I don't think I have much right to nitpick since I'm not working on this. I guess there's some constraints to what can be realistically done; after all, this isn't some huge-budget, pocahontas/dances with wolves ripoff film directed by a director with a massive helping of hubris and five wives... ;)
I agree with the previous
I agree with the previous comments concerning the looks of the Thunderhawk interior and the Servitor. They should be far more gothic looking... Along with the Cathedral as well. The Cathedral should be ridiculously over-sized Haha. Stained glass and more Ecclesiarchal symbols maybe.
You should have left the "FOR
You should have left the "FOR THE EMPORER" typo in there.
Great Art
Wow this stuff is great, i'm all excited about this movie. Anyone know when we might see a CG model or concept design of a space marine?
Bolter Round
It looks really cool, great detail etc. But aren't bolter shells supposed to use piezo-electric ignition ? It kinda looks like the round is supposed to be hit by a firing pin.
Giant nerd comment I know, then again, I could waffle about bolter shells supposedly being caseless etc.
I love the "for the emperor" bit.
40K technology changing...
I too remember reading about the mechanics of the Bolter back in the days of Rogue Trader and 2nd Edition. I recall at first it was a weapon that fired caseless self-propelled bolts. Later, as the concept artists continued to draw images depicting spent cartridges flying out the weapons, they stopped being caseless as fired by electircal charges as anonymous pointed out. Now, it seems bolters are more like the sort of large caliber firearms we have nowadays. Kinda disappointing to see the weapon turn full-circle in its concept, but I agree the art looks great thus far.
Technology Land Slide
Technology is slipping past many worlds. If a good portion degenerate that far there is nothing wrong with that, its accurate storyline.
Concept arts
These new concept arts are fantastic, I really like the tech-servitor, it looks pretty appropriate for 40k. Well, I admitt i dont'like the Tunderhawk interior, it's too bright, no candles, no gothic symbols. I want to see a gothic atmosphere in this film!!!
my ideas about the design
for the servitor,he can use some more medieval look, get him a hood and maybe for illumination he would use semi melted candles, and i would give more emphasis to his facial details, for example to make him look like a plague victim.
The design will stick more closer to the Gothic atmosphere and not something that can remind the casual viewer a startrek borg ripoff.
for the interior of the thunderhawk,i would keep the design but i would change a few details
firstly i would remove the toiler lighting on the roof, and i would give it an atmospheric light shade , with without showing the illumination source.
also i would add some simple computers without interface , like alien movie, noisy and very cold technology.
i generally agree with the other concepts i would really love to see more detail.
thanks!
The servitor looks bit like
The servitor looks bit like rule63 version of Dietrich, but I'm cool with it.
Excellent!!!
That is great work. I saw it yesterday when it was put out...or was that the day before? Anyhow. The Mithron Landscape picture leads me to make the assumption that it will be Tyranids. Any thoughts?
about the mithron pic
maybe it could be tyranids but the landscape could just be a forge world with all the contamination they have.
True
...but I would expect to see a bit of smoke, maybe a hint of a city somewhere...even an outpost, because we all know how poky the Mechanicum is!
