Dan Abnett on writing the ULTRAMARINES movie screenplay

Comments

HUMANS

I hope they feature the imperial guard in the film. Id love to see some storm troopers. Hellguns <3 AND SOME MASSIVE BANEBLADES! again i think they maybe could have chosen a different chapter. I mean the game coming out for ps3 and 360 is also ultramarines :|

PLZ PLZ PLZ PLZ PLZ BE DARK!!!!

I love the ideas and the whole dark chaotic feel of the 40K world. I don't care which chapter they use as long as it turns out F'n DARK. (yes notice the emphasis using F'N DARK)

I hope they try to cater to the market of the fans and more mature audience. Screw some fluffy movie aimed at attracting teens or a new market.

I saw a post earlier about it looking as good as the dawn of war trailers. If the film is anywhere as good as the trailers for Dawn of war..... we are in for some kind of treat!!

GO ON GAMES WORKSHOP GO ON DAN GO ON WHOEVER!!!!!!!

MAKE IT DARRRRRRRRRK!!!!!!! <-------- AND DOWN RIGHT HORRIFIC AND GRITTY !!!

A UK FAN.

Dan "The Man" Abnett writing the script

If anyone had any doubt about how genuine the producers of this movie were they can rest easy in my opinion now that Dan Abnett is underwriting the script. I say "underwriting" to answer a lot of the concerns that people are expressing about first drafts, editing, etc. Anyone who reads the novels knows the god-like status Dan Abnett has ascended to with his works for the Black Library - but, as he openly admits, he's never written a script for a real 40K movie before - who has???? Games Workshop are steadfast in their protection of this amazing franchise and let's face it - there are people out there that can turn Abnett prose into realized movie script better than Dan alone. You can be assured that the grit, essence and pure character evolution that Dan gives us novel after novel will be preserved.

I'm also not surprised that the Ultramarines are the subject for this first movie venture. I've been a rabid fan of 40K for about 20 years and the Ultramarines were the first aspect I was drawn to all those years ago. Little has changed since then (White Scars rule!) but I am happy collecting armies of pretty much every faction/race because of the awesome way the game/novels/PC games are handled.

It was only a matter of time before someone approached GW with a serious offer. I'm drawing parallels with Peter Jackson and LOTR and JJ Abrams with Star Trek in my mind here.

The discussions about cinema release or straight to DVD are not really factors in my mind because you and me know that even on a straight to DVD release the cult following and huge sales this will generate will push the follow-up into the mainstream immediately. I say look at this as a test-bed, the litmus test. However it is released will be perfectly fine in my mind.

Ask yourself this - are most of your friends that know nothing about the 40K universe ready for a movie like this without the in-depth knowledge we all have on these early blog pages? I am barely able to hold-in my excitement in order to write this without gibbering like a heretic!

If anyone had any remaining doubts about the authenticity of this project, well then that simple schematic of a bolter round got MY juices flowing!

Keep it coming with the artwork and other updates!

OMG OMG OMG

I have just wet my pants having found out about this movie!!

Awesome awesome awesome please dont fek it up.

Two Questions! (maybe more!)

Okay, check 0:45 again. Did he say he wrote this script two and a half years ago? And was it me or did he mention the scripts final revision? As in, his script has been re-written by someone else?

Also, has Dan ever done a screenplay before? The way he talks about big new challenge,it seems as if he's a bit new to it. I guess if he is a rookie in that department it would explain all the script revisions!

At 1:03 he talks about 'the unit'. As the movie is going to be a 70min straight-to-DVD release, you dont have much time to cram a lot in, so can we assume the action is centered around a five man squad of some sort (command group perhaps?)

In conclusion, FF Advent Children rocked, so to can this!

Release date/ tyrannic wars

give us a release date. PLEASE!!! please make this about the tyranic wars. one of the new trygons/mawlocks would look awsome in cgi. also the battles for polar fortresses would be made of win. please release a book to acompany it

Woohoo!!!! Sweetness!!!

The fact that Dan Abnett is writing the screenplay for this movie already makes my mind up for how this movie is gonna be. His Ravenor, and Guant's Ghosts series' are the best, along with his works in the Heresy series. They are all great works of fiction that are in-depth and gripping.

@say.a.prayer: Those "movies"..... were... HORRIBLE!!.... Never bring them up AGAIN!!!

Chaos Wars

I belive that they will be fighting the chaos marines or the chaos pilgrims and fanatics as this is the big enamy of the imperium. but then again that is the IG's job, space marines take plaest and defend the one on final stands.

I really don't care if they

I really don't care if they make it to get younger fans. Aslong as they get the facts right. I really hope this is the first of many movies. I have every one of Dans WH 40000 books. He has my Confidence. Ultramarines is a start.

hell yeagh dan rocks at this

hell yeagh dan rocks at this crap.
he is such a good writer.
i do hope that this lives up to the hype...
remember that other animated movie with the blood ravens/angels/whatever
[shudder]the...memories...[shudder]

Dan Abnett as Writer

Lets face facts having Dan Abnett writing the screenplay for this movie means one thing and one thing only. Awesome lots of Awesome. Face it the man Who brought Characters like Gaunt and Loki to life will satisfy the need for good dialogue, impressive and unique characters and an entrance on to the silver screen that 40K deserves.

I hope this movie can live up to the hype.

Excellent News

Mr Abnett is a fantastic writer and I am hoping for great things out of this movie.

As for Ultramarine, well they are one of the most recognisable Chapters, I think alot of the hate stems from the fact that until Uriel Ventris they were seen as rather boring, having written the rules of war and being dogmatic to them. Infact I find them one of the most interesting Chapters, yes they may not have the dark secrets of the Blood Angels, Dark Angel etc or the easily recognisable real world associations of the White Scars or Space Wolves but they are a massive force, one that actually regents a domain which from a movie point of view, justifies more easily introducing civillian, PDF and Guard characters.

Remember most Guard would be lucky to see a marine, in the distance, while drunk once in their lifetime. Whereas those under the Ultramarine regency and whose only family members may be able to distantly relate to a space marine would have a little more familiarity with them.

Also the Ultramarines represent the stagnation of what the Imperium is, yes they have a great codex on how to fight but is was only written once and going against it has serious repercussions (See the Ultramarine Novels). I love the idea of seeing Space Marines in turmoil with what is left of their humanity knowing they must follow a fixed set of rules of combat while the human element of them cries out for a flexibility and almost bravado that they are never allowed to follow. I think the emotions of doing the right things as an Ultramarine should do something, and how a character wants to do something would mean we see more then just a hack and slash fest and maybe get a visual representation of why an individual Space Marine is a legendary hero in his own right.

The double-edged sword of films for fans.

The only major issue I have with the film as announced is the lack of mass-market appeal. GW is (and this is all an assumption, mind you; we all know what that means) going to be catering almost exclusively to existing fans of 40K, which is going to eliminate the need for a lot of the more subtle filmmaking techniques which could have been used to introduce Space Marines to a larger audience. Bear in mind, we have no info on the plot, but imagine the type of story Abnett may have crafted! Hes an expert on the Guard, so I'm hoping we see an embattled world teetering on the brink of a fall to Chaos. The desprate Guardsmen defending said planet would be the 'main' characters, to put a human face on the misery of the situation, and to give the average moviegoer someone to relate to. And then, when all seems lost...the Angels of Death swoop in to wreck bloody carnage in the Emperor's name. This allows the Marines to be used as a plot device, highlighting their godlike prowess next to the mere mortals in the Guard. However, as the movie is (I think!) being written for 40K fans I imagine it will be more of a hack and slash with...well, Ultramarines. Like the tiltle says. Not that I'm suggesting the script will be anything less than magnificent, as Dan Abnett is a master craftsman. Just that the awe you feel towards the Ultramarines will be from what you ALREADY know, not what you discover during the film.

Of course, I may have widely missed the mark. I never have been able to hit the side of a Baneblade.

At any rate, however it turns out, I can't wait to see it. Here's hoping it sells well enough for a limited theatrical release!

-Steve

Old habits die hard

I can't help but shake the feeling that GW will end up pulling this slightly away from fan's appeal for marketing purposes actually. GW is a company and they want to make money. They always have and I cant help but shake the feeling that the habit will die hard and will be aimed at bringing in a new wave of young gamers and as usual aimed at the Ultramarines bracket which we have shoved down our throat the minute you set foot in GW. Always is Ultramarines and I fear at being aimed at a slightly wider audience it will loose alot of significance for Veterans.

-death jester

Woop!

Thank God for Dan Abnett!!!!!
Hope this film is good cause if it's not it will be hard to make more!
btw I hate Ultramariens as much as anyone but they are THE space marine chapter, and if you don't have the boring chapter, it would make the others less fun :)

The film

One thing I don't understand is the amount of complaints against the Ultramarines. Apart from as someone said being the iconic Space Marines, they have a rich history to pick a history from - they are after all one of the 20 founding chapters - and one without any of mutantic nonsense like the Blood Angels blood drinking and the Space Wolves being more or less nordic/viking werewolves... I think this might please both players (seeing something they actually recognize) and others, seeing something that will be 'standard' - any deviation would probably confuse people.

I haven't read much of this guy, but if he is so experienced of writing for the 40K universe, then I'm happy. The only thing I demand (yes, demand or I won't purchase a single snotling from GW) is that they show the Space Marines as the badasses they really are. The intros to the Dawn of War series are fantastic (and the quality the film should aim for at the very least), but the Blood Ravens fall waay too easy.

Hopes for the future

Dan being the writer gives me complete reassurance as to the movies quality. If i could choose the next movie for them to do it would no doubt have to be the Gaunt's Ghost series by the man of the hour Dan Abnett. Can't wait to see it. Hell i can't wait for a release date.

I would kill a thousand

I would kill a thousand heretics in the name of the Emperor to see an HBO miniseries detailing the Great Crusade and Horus Heresy. Like "Rome", only in space.

In the bright near future

Depending on how this goes down, they may make more films. I don't know about you guys, but seeing an Imperial Guard Baneblade Company cracking down on some poor heretical souls would be most satisfying on the imax. ;)

Praise The Emperor!!!!

Hey all I am an American 40k player. The moment I heard about this movies i was excide. When i heard it was about the Ultramarines I lost my mind (Best Army Ever Damn right). Dan Abnett is a great writer and is prefect for the spot the director....eh i need to know more about him i just dont want this to blow up in my face and turn out like crap. All my fellow players down at the shop are excided also we do hope that it gets a release in the States (cause i dont want to have to pay for a ticket to go to London). just hope that the stupid rednecks dont get to excide like 300 :P

Movie release

fear not! the movie will be straight to DVD release and since the U.S. is such a massive market GW will undoubtily release it their =!

I agree.

I am a fellow states player as well and I have been a huge fan for years. I mean my heart stoped at the idea of a Ultramarines movie my friends and I are always talking about how cool it would be for a Warhammer 40K Movie. Dan Abnett you are the MAN. Love the Guants Ghost seires. Own every book!!!

Abnett = great BUT please ensure this is DARK

Much more reassured by Dan Abnett's involvement. I just hope this doesn't go down the Star Wars route and aim for the PG crowd. W40K is dark and gothic. The good guys execute people for heresy!

I think the task is enormous. This clearly has to be a "set up movie" because it needs to explain what is going on/background quickly and clearly (because non players/fluff readers may also see it). It needs to be successful and capture attention as that would mean...

...they would do more!

My dream is a series of movies covering:

Gaunt's Ghosts
Eisenhorn
Ravenor

More SM chapters.

As for the choice of Ultramarines - well that makes perfect sense. They are ICONIC and would only be considered "boring" by long time players.

Bring it on!!!!

When are they going to give us the DVD release date?

the smurfs

dude i disagree the dark angels would have been better with the background they have "the fallen" "cypher" etc the smurfs are boring it would be nice if workshop remembered there are other space marine chapters

Awesome!

I often imagined the intro to a 40k movie involving a montage of battlefield scenes with a brooding voiced narator detailing from the conquering and undoing of the great crusade, to the scope of administrating a galaxy and how "in the grim darkness..."

As far as Ultramarines, I liked the Pavonis story culminating with the release of the Nightbringer in one of McNeil's books.

I hope the next movie

I hope the next movie dedicated to Wasrhammer 4000 will be of Horus Heresy cycle

It better be awesome!

IT BETTER BE THE COOLSET THING IN THE WHOLE WIDE WORLD DAN ABNETT!!!
IM COUNTING ON YOU!!!!

He who stand with the company shall be their brother.

Yup. Codex, you have my full support! I hope you encounter no troubles! Good luck. And hey, you guys should play DoW 2 in your off-time, it's fun as hell. Especially the Last Stand.

Why oh why...

Is it always Ultramarines?
Although, with Dan Abnett as a writer, I'm sure it will turn out great, even if it is about the Ultramarines. :P

Why Ultramarines?

WHY WHY WHY?!?!?!

The only issue i'd have with the film at this point is the fact that its damned Ultramarines again! In my honest opinion they are far too overused! It would've been nice to have seen another chapter get the spotlight for once (with blood ravens being the exception of course). Other than that, bring it on!

Aye. Im glad there will be a

Aye. Im glad there will be a WH40K move, and that Dan's the writer.
But Ultramarines... Just drop it already GW.:)
They got loads of other cool chapters out there. I'd love a move about the Dark Angles, or the Black Templars (Or the Tanith First!!).

my opinion

i think choosing dan abnett as the writer was a smart move, i dont know about the director though. I havent seen any of his work so i hope that he does a good job!

as far as the foe that they will be fighting in the movie goes i think that chaos marines would be the best choice. I just think the contrast between the two would really do well in the movie. and it would also be pretty cool if they did some kind of montage showing all of the emporers enimies at the beggining of the movie. maybe during the opening credits. I hope the movie turns out as good as we all hope!!!

Yay!

I hope that the movie will be blessed by an intricate storyline, decent CGI, and good voice acting.

Abnett, being the write is an added bonus - so long as the other people on the team 'listen' to him, the movie will be great.

Wondering if this movie will

Wondering if this movie will have any references to fans, like cameo role of K59 or John Fuklaw.

My thoughts

I was first gonna wreck my computer after i heard about ultramarines movie. it would never work.
But then, i somehow after searching, found movie called "Damnatus" from youtube. I watched it, and i was amazed. It was clearly Dark Heresy movie, but it was still awesome. If movie with budjet of few thousand dollars works, Ultramarines will work too.

And, you should really watch it, it has awesome ending. Respect.

Who Knows?

As for favorite writers. Who's to say Ol' Abnett can't ask Graham for a bit of advice on Ultramarines? After all. Graham is probably undisputed in that area XD.

As for the setting for the story.
It would HAVE to be the Ultramarines. After all. They are only on every single issue of Codex Space Marines I've ever seen since playing not including the Fists of course, they're recognizable to old and new fans. They epitomize what a space marine should be. While all others have their own quirks, as cool as they are.

I hope Abnett and GW keep a close eye on this movie and don't let it slip away from the heart of 40k. It would kill so many fans.

Here's wishing the best!

I must say, Dan Abnett doing

I must say, Dan Abnett doing the screenplay for Ultrasmurfs the movie is a fantastic idea. The imagery he has brought to the 40k galaxy with the ghosts and eisenhorn/ravenor series are fantastic. just need graham mcniell to help with smurf ideas to make it perfect

Don't want it to ruin the game

The only thing I am concerned about is if it will change the game in anyway. I really don't want GW to change the game to please the people that watch the movie. An example of this is making the models prepainted and preassembled so they can play, and that would ruin the game for alot of people that already play because those two things make this hobby very unique and enjoyable to all of us. I for one don't want that uniqueness to be taken away I enjoy being able to say I play a game that is totally unique.

Superb!!!

From all the other posts I think we are all in agreement seeing that Mr Abnett is writing the movie is a great thing!

Personnally I could only see a choice of three Graham McNeil (this movie is about the Ultramarines after all), Ben Counter (Soul Drinkers is there any greater chapter!?), and Dan Abnet.

So seeing that one of my favorite authors, who not only has written about the battlefield of the 41st millenium but about the home front as well, is writing this movie I can only get more excited about this movie!

Here's hoping that he is given right of veto and that his vision is shown on the big screen!!!

P.S. anyone else hoping to see Gabriel Ventris (I know it's unlikely but I can hope!).

One question

I'm just wondering, will the film star Tyranids as the 'bad guys' (I can't possibly imaging GW putting Ultrasmurfs as the 'bad guys' :P ) or Orks?

Hopefully Tyranids as they have a good amount of fluff connected to each other.
Besides, which would be coolest?
Soulless killing-machines from another galaxy or fungus with anger management issues?

Holy Emperor's WRATH!!!

This is gonna be so amaaaazingly sweet!!

I love Abnett's stories, I have read novels by many authors by now, but no one makes it so real as him (15/10 for that!).

Though, I'm a bit frightened about the film because it's nearly unreachable to fit in a movie all the storytelling plus the complete interplay between the characters that we are used to, having read Abnett's Sagas, without missing anything.
(I'm not sure if you do understand me)

Anyway, I'm anxiously looking forward to see those Blue Ceramite colosus smashin Hammers into the face of the Emperor's foes on the big screen...

Good luck with the film!!

WAAAAARGHH!!

Jandro.

Awesome..but

Dan Abnett as writer of the movie will be awesome. It will make it a 12/10.

However, writing isn't the whole movie and can be let down by other parts such as poor directing and effects etc.

Lets hope the movie isn't set down by poor efforts from the other creators of the film because i think we can all agree that Dan will do a really great job at the writing.

Abnett + w40 movie = DO WANT!

Abnett + w40 movie = DO WANT!

YES

Holy crap! this movie is gonna be so good! so glad they got Dan to write it. DO MORE NOW!

pray!

i'm living with the W40k universe since about 10 to 15 years. im CEO of 2 companys and not really kind of internet and w40k freak.
BUT i reallly really pray, they give Dan Abnett kind of veto-right, so he can EVERYTIME say: "no, thats not that what we wanne see in W40k universe".

this movie is a great step, and can ruin much of the universe of w40k, but with dan abnet in boat, if they listen to him, it will be great.

looking forward for the first teasers.

Hmm

I was fairly certain the iconic core of the 40K universe was the fact that is was grim, and quite dark apparently.

Or the fighting between all those 'other' factions (ludicrous I know).

Mustn't grumble, as long as all the action is hogged by 'heroic' guardsmen *cough* Abnett *cough*

Concrete Hero

www.heresy-online.net

Woohoo

The choice of Abnett has given the film an enormous amount of credibility, which I know was one of the major concerns for potential viewers concerning the film. The other major concern was authenticity to the WH40K universe, which DA assures us is being attended to.

We can only hope the film is enormously successful, tapping into the psyche of a whole new range of fans, leading to demand for more and more films. One can dream.

subj

Wow!!! Fantastic!! I really like his books, and think that moviemakers made a good choise having appointed him to scriptwriter position. Anyway, we will hail him or throw down from the throne only after premiere =))

Author choice

I think that Dan Abnett was a good choice, but I wish that Grahm mcneil would be the writer because he did such a good job with the ultramarines books.

with dan abnett writing the

with dan abnett writing the screenplay i can see a few oscars on the cards for this movie ;-P
